In this post, we will guide you how to extend the bathroom vanity top.

Why is there a need to extend bathroom vanity top?

First of all, why is there a need to extend the vanity top or when we need to extend the vanity top? It could be because your vanity top is too short that you can not manage your countertop or sink accessories.

Or maybe you need some extra space and height due to the short height of the current vanity’s top. In DIY projects, you may not be as professional as a professional worker for this job, but you can do this by considering proper measurements of the top and countertop.

10 DIY Steps To Extend Bathroom Vanity Top

Step 1: Measurement

In your first step, you need to know your vanity has enough size to adopt proper fitting for the new vanity’s top. Maybe which top you choose for your vanity will not fit it due to its small size. To overcome this situation, measurement is needed.

In measurement, measure your vanity’s width, height, and especially depth. Along with this measurement, measure the countertop’s thickness and distance from one edge to the center of your sink.

Note down all these measurements, and then find a top for your vanity that fit according to these measurements.

Step 2: Necessary Tools

After you have purchased or found a new vanity top, it’s time to gather the necessary tools to change the top of the vanity. It would help if you had a drill, a saw, tape, and a straight edge in tools.

Step 3: Remove the existing vanity’s top

After having tools and measurements, another step is to remove your existing vanity’s top. This is a tricky step, and you may face issues removing the top. Different methods to the vanity attach different types of tops, some are attached with glue, and some are attached with screws.

Use a hammer and chisel if your vanity’s top is attached to glue. First, apply a chisel to it till it scores the cabinet. After this one, you can hammer it until it breaks out from the countertop or vanity.

In case of an attached screw, use a screw opener and open those screws to de-attach the top from the vanity.

Step 4: Cut Vanity’s Top

You have done measurements and gathered tools for this DIY project, and now you can cut the vanity’s top according to desired requirements and measurements, which we have noted before.

To cut the vanity’s top of the vanity, you can use a saw tool; before this, do safety measurements for yourself too, and wear glasses to protect your eyes and gloves to protect your skin.

Ensure you cut that top in the size we need to fit your vanity.

Step 5: Make Holes

With the help of a drill, make holes in the vanity’s top for your sink. This is a very important step because if the hole on top is not exactly required, you can’t place it on the vanity, and it will not fit above the sink.

Step 6: Make Smooth Edge

After cutting the vanity’s top, ensure its edges are smooth enough to fit correctly. You can use sandpaper to smooth their edges if these are not smooth. Making the edge smooth will ensure that it fits and adjusts from edge to edge without having any accidents.

Step 7: Level of Top

Now, use the level tool to keep the vanity’s top in level, and install it correctly; during installation, if it is not in the correct level, make possible adjustments to make it in level.

Step 8: Join The Edges & Install

After leveling up the top of the vanity, you now have to join the edge of the top with the vanity; if the new top is larger than the measurement we noted, you can cut the extra top with the help of a saw or jigsaw.

After this, add extra adhesive construction material to fix these edges to the vanity and press it firmly down.

Step 9: Seal Edges

When the adhesive construction material is dried, use a router or tool to smooth these edges. Once done, apply waterproof silicon sealant between the vanity’s top and vanity. This will seal the edge and make them waterproof, which will help keep damage from water or moisturization.

Step 10: Final Touch

Until this step, you have installed the new vanity’s top on your vanity and already sealed it with waterproof silicon. This is the last step, in which you must apply the final touches on the new top of your vanity.

Take sandpaper, make a complete smooth of any rough spot, and finish the entire surface of the top.

After that, an extra step is optional for you; if you want extra protection for your vanity’s top, then you can use polyurethane or this finishing product on it.

Conclusion

Extending your vanity top can increase your vanity space without spending money purchasing an entirely new bathroom vanity. By following the above steps, you can change the small vanity top with the new one with the exact size we require for enough space.
